Total Slacker // Widowspeak // Blonds

Total Slacker

There has been a huge 90′s revival with bands like Yuck, Bleached, and Pavement. Total Slacker is a nice addition to the movement.  Total Slacker is very reminiscent of a lot of lo-fi punky type bands from an era not long ago . In fact, the band’s whole aesthetic and theme relates to the 90′s era. They named their band after Richard Linklater’s 1991 film about aimless Austin-ites Slacker. Their lyrics cite “Full House” and New Kids on the Block, and they even have an entire song about a VHS collection.

Total Slacker is a Brooklyn based rock band, with garage and psychedelic leanings. Their live shows are known to be lively Drummer Ross Condon and bassist Emily Oppenheimer grew up in Sante Fe, New Mexico where they attended high school together. Vocalist and frontman Tucker Rountree hails from Salt Lake City. It wasn’t until after moving to Brooklyn that they truly came together as a band.

Widowspeak is a Brooklyn, New York, United States-based quartet that play hazy atmospheric and , formed in 2010.

There are aspects of the band’s sound – abrasive guitar hooks, immediate drumming, and incessant codas – that speak to living in a big city. But there’s also a dreary sparseness, a David Lynch-esque darkness, culled from the other members’ native Washington.

The band’s skeletal sound began to take shape, with Robert’s rust-belt guitar parts lending a restless, sinister edge to Molly’s subdued melodies and soft vocal style. Writing became a collaborative effort, and Widowspeak racked up an arsenal of songs. By fall the trio had recorded a six-track cassette using only a built-in laptop microphone and Garageband. The self-released October Tape, as it was called, fell into the hands of Brooklyn’s Captured Tracks. Weeks later, after only their sixth show, Widowspeak recorded the 7” single Harsh Realm, in anticipation of a full LP.

Blonds is Miss Cari Rae and Jordy Asher, based in Brooklyn via Florida. They’re partial to slow tempos and intense, almost Lynchian dreamy atmospheres.
